LM - 00012 ca. 1920's
Leland Brilliantone Mando by Larson Brothers EXC-
This is a lovely Larson made mandolin and yes it is really called
a "Mando" on the
label. The top is
beautifully aged spruce and crack free. The back and sides are highly
figured Brazilian rosewood and there is one repaired crack in the back
and none on the sides. Rosewood overlay on the headstock and original
enclosed tuning pegs that work fine. Original tailpiece. Paper thin
tortoise shell pickguard and exquisite reproduction bridge by Chris Berkov as
well as a complete setup. Clear strong voice and easy playing. It fits
in this funky old case
so that's what we'll ship it in.
Price: $895.00 Reduced Now $595.00
SM - 00017 ca. 1912 -
1914 Shutt Mandolin EXC+ While not labeled,
this mandolin and the
other one in The Museum share with the labeled Shutts and each other
many similar characteristics that pre-date features 'introduced' on the
F-5 in 1922. The neck joins the body a little past the 14th fret. The
light cremona sunburst
top is carved with f-holes. The fingerboard is elevated as is the pickguard. The back and sides are flamey
sycamore. The same triple binding and workmanship is evident on these
slope shouldered Shutts as on the more flamboyant ones and these sound just as
good if not better. This one has a plain headstock but a fancy
engraved flower with leaves on the tuning pegs cover. And
the case is a true gem
and a joy to operate with its push button spring latches.
And the real good news is that this old Shutt sounds like a
real carved top f- hole mandolin ... no kidding .... chop and volume and punch and tone and
everything. Quite useful.

GM - 00089 1928 Gibson A
Model Blackface EXC A little wear on the black
top and a bit as well on
the birch back and sides
which like the rest of the mandolin are crack free. This is a real good
player with a good strong sound. Silver stenciled "The Gibson" on the
truss rodded headstock
and original tuning pegs.
Adjustable bridge with
1921 patent stamp and nice engraved tailpiece. Good label with
serial # 87208 nice and
clear. Good newer shaped tweed hard shell case.
Price: $2850.00 Reduced Now $2250.00
VM - 0007 ca. 1940 Vega D-
100 Electric Hollow Body Mandolin EXC+ A nice
example of electrification
from one of the innovative pioneers of the early days. And it sounds
pretty good acoustically too with its
elevated fingerboard and it plays real nice and easy. Sunburst spruce
top and subtly 'bursted'
mahogany back (those are
reflections in the picture) and sides.
All crack free and clean and all original from amber buttoned tuning pegs to cloud tailpiece to the
tone and volume knobs and the inside label. Vega script on the headstock is nice and clean
too. It's got the old amphenol style input jack and a good proper cable that works fine.
All the electronics also work fine. The original hard shell case is
in nice shape. Scale length is 13 3/4".
Price: $1995.00 Reduced Now $1595.00
SM - 00010 ca. 1905 Wm. Stahl
Bowl Back Mandolin EXC+
From the estate of Pepito Perez (Pepito The Clown) of "I Love Lucy" fame,
(not to mention his other movies from 1949 to 1951) comes this Larson Brothers gem.
Obviously played but also treasured and displayed with it's hanging cord which is still
nicely intact and wrapped on the original engraved covered tuning pegs.
Forty Brazilian rosewood ribs compose the
back with a rosewood
skirt enclosing them. The
top is aged spruce with pearl trim around the edges and soundhole.
The entire instrument is crack free.
The pickguard is ornately
inlaid with vines. The
label is in fine shape. It has the characteristic Larson black
stripe under the fingerboard
binding and nice inlays in the ebony fingerboard. The headstock is also pearl inlaid.
No case.

OF - 0005 1930's Oahu
"Floral" Flat Top EXC - Wow! Such beauty. From
the gray-green pearloid dots in the golden yellow pearloid fingerboard to the vine
growing into the
pickguard, this baby is stunning. 13 inch lower bout;
1 13/16" nut width; 24 1/4" scale length. Spruce top is highly ornamented
with bee-yoo-tee-ful flowers and has one well repaired hairline crack
extending from the bridge to the bottom. The rest of the guitar is crack
free and the Brazilian rosewood veneered birch back and sides have wonderful
figuring to them. The
headstock is also resplendent in pearloid and sports the Oahu
Honolulu Conservatory of Music plaque
and the original tuning pegs
remain intact. It appears that this guitar was originally set up for
Hawaiian style playing since there is no end pin hole on the bottom ( a 'reverse bookmatch'
bottom at that) and the bridge saddle is straight across. A previous owner did some
custom work on the neck at the heel
to make it more comfotable. We have had it set up in the normal spanish
style and it is fantastic for blues fingerpicking and the like.
Even the original case
has a floral pattern on it that is almost impossible to photograph.

GF - 00026 1936 Gibson HG
L Century Hawaiian Flat Top Guitar EXC ++
Here's an incredible specimen. This guitar has a huge deep bright sound
and absolutely sings. And it is in amazing all original condition. You
could convert it to regular Spanish style but it is such an original gem
and sounds so great Hawaiian style (and the neck is huge) that it seems
a shame so we're selling it in its original configuration. Absolutely
crack free with no issues. Sunburst spruce top and beautiful flamey maple
back and sides. Big round "C" profile
mahogany neck has a
subtle dark sunburst. Perfect
bridge, pickguard, original
tuning pegs. Pearloid peghead
with rosewood inset and the pearl "Gibson" logo and fancy slotted diamond inlaid into
that. The fingerboard receives
the same pearloid with inlaid rosewood and pearl treatment. The
endpin is gone but not needed
for lap playing. It has its
original case in tattered but functional condition. So many of these
guitars have been converted that it is a joy to find an all original one in such
splendid condition that sounds so good.

MF - 00069 1942 Martin 00-
18 VG++ These old 14 fret 00 size Martins often
seem to put out way more sound than one would expect and this one will
stand right up there with the 000's. It is totally crack free and the
action and frets are just fine. The bridge has been replaced and there
has been some touch up where a larger bridge once resided. Other than
that the top has its original
finish. The mahogany back and
sides are original and have
nicks and scrapes but are crack free except for a well done patch in the lower treble side where some trauma must
have occured. The area around the bottom has a few minor dings. Original tuning pegs and the peghead is in fine shape.
Martin Deluxe hard shell
case.
Price: $5995.00 Reduced Now $5500.00
TG - 00101 1929 - 30 Gibson
TG-1 Tenor Guitar VG + The quintessential Gibson
tenor from the late 20's - early 30's with the Mastertone Banjo inlay in
the headstock and the
beautiful 'argentine' sunburst on the crack free top that has a shadow of
a previously installed pickguard. And that classic beautifully
grained vintage mahogany on the
sides and back. The back
has three well repaired hairlines (hard to see) and there is also one on
the treble side. Original
end pin and original
Grover pancake tuning pegs.
The bridge is original and
it looks like perhaps the original owner might have put the ancient
screws in it just for 'safekeeping' they are so old.
And we also have the original hard
shell case which is in pretty good shape but the back hinges
are broken and there is a little break in the back at the top.

TG - 00082 1950
Gibson Custom L-7 T Blonde with Bow Tie Inlays EXC +
-
Check it out on its page in The
Museum.
It's an early 1950 as evidenced by the dot being connected to the
"G" on the headstock inlay which also has
the open "o" and open "g" and the lower connection to the "n". Plus the headstock gets
thinner at it's end which stopped in mid 1950. Plus the serial number is
A (probably but almost completely obliterated) 5286 which puts it in early 1950.
17" Lower bout, bow tie inlays just like a banjo (had to be custom ordered
like the
Tsumura ES-175 - DT Special)
and nice maple back and sides with a big bold sound. Newer hard shell
case.
